Andy Gray reaches settlement with Sky after sexism row

Andy Gray has reportedly reached a settlement with his former employer, Sky, after he was sacked for his part in the sexism row that engulfed Sky Sports last month.

Gray’s contract of employment was terminated after video footage emerged on YouTube of his inappropriate behaviour towards co-presenter Charlotte Jackson. Gray and his on-screen partner, Richard Keys, were already suspended from the air following their sexist comments about the female linesman Sian Massey.

The pair’s off-air remarks were leaked to the media by an unknown source. Keys is heard to say about Massey: “somebody better get down there and explain off-side to her”. Grays replied with: “Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don’t know the offside rule”.

After his dismissal, Gray instructed his solicitors at the London law firm Schillings to look into the situation.  He was reportedly seeking a settlement of between £3 million and £4 million.

However, an inside source at Sky told the Mail on Sunday that Gray had received “a mere fraction of the £4 million”. It was reported that he was offered a much smaller sum by Sky and that he accepted the settlement.

His lawyers and his PR failed to comment on the settlement.

His colleague, Richard Keys, resigned from his job after a video appeared on YouTube during which he describes a woman as “it” and asks former footballer Jamie Redknapp if he had “smashed it”.

It remains to be seen if Keys will ask for any kind of settlement figure from Sky following his resignation.

Sian Massey, the unwitting figure at the centre of all the controversy, returned to the game yesterday when she ran the line during the Aldershot and Chesterfield League Two game.
